The Morro Castle
On Sept. 9, 1934, the Morro Castle, back from a cruise to Cuba, caught fire in south Jersey and drifted to Asbury Park, where it ran aground. Of the 550 people on board 134 died. The ship stayed in place for a couple of years and became a great tourist attraction, inspiring even the sale of souvenirs.
